Planning a military relocation to Colorado Springs? Relocating to the Colorado Springs area is our specialty. Since Camp Carson and Peterson Field were established in 1942, the Pikes Peak Region has become a major military center and the nucleus for U.S. military space operations.

Camp Carson (now Fort Carson) started as a training ground for soldiers, including the first mountain troops, mules and dogs of World War II. The base has 137,000 acres, with 244,000 more training acres being developed at Pinon Canyon in southeastern Colorado. Evans U.S. Army Community Hospital, the newest facility at Fort Carson, boasts ten operating rooms, 195 beds, outpatient clinics and a five-story Nursing Tower. Fort Carson is home to 3 major combat and 1 large combat support units, plus numerous smaller active and reserve units.

Peterson Air Force Base was designed as a fighter training base during World War II and known as "Pete Field". Today, Peterson Air Force Base is part of a multi-faceted military complex. In 1957, came the North American Air Mountain in 1966; and Air Force Space Command in 1982. It is the home of U.S. Space Command and a number of agencies of the military which has further secured Colorado Springs' position as a strategic military space center.

The many new Space Command changes have created several new support organizations and facilities:

21st Space Wing at Peterson Air Force Station, operating sensor sites throughout the world and operates Peterson Air Force Base and supports the world -wide operations of Air Force Space Command.

50th Space Wing at Schriever Air Force Base, operates the Consolidated Space Operations Center (CSOC). The units at Schriever control four satellite systems.

The 302nd Tactical Wing, a 1,200 member reserve unit with 16 C-130 transports, is stationed at Peterson.

The Air Force Academy, built in 1958, has earned its reputation as an outstanding four year college for our future Air Force officers. Each year, nearly 10,000 men and women seek the 1,000 entering freshman slots. A scenic 18,000 acres are set aside for the training grounds and facilities which are situated at 7,200 feet above sea level, one of Colorado's major tourist attractions. The $4.5 million Barry Goldwater Visitor Center at the Academy was dedicated in May, 1986. Funded solely by private donations, the aluminum and glass center houses a theater, restaurant and displays on cadet life. There are many events at the Academy open to the public -- intercollegiate sports, band concerts, plays, recitals, and parades.

The military organizations in Colorado Springs play a significant role in the local economic base. Since World War II, the military contribution has been steady and growing - now approximately $883 million in direct expenditures per year. Military families, both active and retired, comprise approximately one-third of our population.

Schriever AFB is home to the AF Space Command's 50th Space Wing. Since the early 1960's, control of many DOD satellites were handled at Onizuka AFB in Sunnyvale, California. An ever-increasing workload and no room for expansion created a requirement for another satellite control facility. Schriever (formerly known as Falcon AFB) was selected from twelve sites because of the unique related activities. Among the units at Schriever AFB are the Consolidated Space Operations Center and the National Test Bed Joint Program Office (NTBJPO).

The Peterson Complex, with a total of 18,449 military families, has a significant impact on the community. Military and civilian employee payrolls, in addition to service and construction contracts, create local area jobs which generate secondary income. Additionally, the payroll figure for retirees living in the local area also has a significant impact on the Colorado Springs community. The total active defense economic impact exceeds $2 Billion per year.
